A.
If there is a massive air visible in the pumphead or noise arising from pumphead, go to Air in Circuit.
B.
If there is an acute pumphead thrombosis, and there is a visible clot and/or noise arising from pumphead, with no disengagement nor air presence, determine if the patient can be weaned from ECMO.
C.
If the patient can be weaned from ECMO, go to Coming Off ECMO Emergently.
D.
If the patient CANNOT be weaned from ECMO, go to Whole Circuit Replacement or Circuit Component Changes for the pumphead as indicated.
E.
Exclude other complications impacting on blood flow:
- Evidence of severe drainage failure: severely decreased PINLET
- Evidence of return obstruction: severely increased PPRE-ML/PPOST-ML
- Evidence of acute ML failure: severely increased PPRE-ML / severely decreased ΔP
If any of the above scenarios are detected, treat accordingly.
F.
Exclude motor failure:
- Screen on
- No disengagement
- No air or clot
- No other potential causes, i.e., motor failure with a working driving unit.
