Use this decision tree if the patient being supported on VA ECMO is under consideration for weaning.

Prerequisites include:

Cardiac pathology is compatible with weaning.
The patient has been supported for an appropriate timeframe with ECMO for recovery of the cardiac pathology.
Stable hemodynamics with no or low vasoactive agents.
Recovering or stable organ function.
Adequate anticoagulation to safely perform a VA ECMO wean.
Adequate oxygenation and ventilation is anticipated when decannulated.
Multi-disciplinary team consensus on prognosis.
